According to Dr Ted Roberts that PA have intimacy and attachment disorders, and until they face their pain they won't be free. What do you think? The video of where he says this is below I should mention he's a Christian and does briefly talk about why so many Christians are PA, but I think it's interesting even if you're not religious.
I tend to agree, but I think "pain" comes in many different forms. It may well be nothing more than seeing yourself for who and what you are. I don't recall being detached or abused or anything of the sort growing up, but I've always thought I was a "decent person". It was very hard for me to look at myself & my actions honestly and conclude that I was a horrible person. I had to own my sexual deviance and that was not fun or easy.
My SO stopped relapsing when he understood he had issues self sabotaging relationships because he mimicked his parents divorce cycle. Because it's how he grew up and into that pattern. ... So, yeah. Absolutely.
