I highly recommend the Yale Open Course on political theory— it’s also on YouTube. If you have iTunesU it has the lectures named by whatever book they’re on, and I used it while I read along with Aristotle’s Politics and Plato’s Republic. Helped illuminate things. If you have any q’s I did my thesis on Plato’s utopian concept of family in the Republic.
I was gifted a Book Of Mormon by a friend who is apart of the group. Didn't know what to do with it, but I decided to keep it in the old collection anyway. Probably (like 99% probably), reading it won't ever happen. But who knows. Finished the other book I mentioned above. Recommend it to any of the Christian faith. I'm not of the faith, but we need some moral fabric to stick together, so I respect my fellows. Onto new books....like....er......have to dig through my normie shelf.... Bit of a change up. It's fun to learn, but tragic to know of evils beyond our control. God bless those who suffer, be their light, guide them unto You who fill all things.
only book we read on mormonism was "under the banner of heaven", bit sensationalist; what is the book you were gifted?
Honestly, I thought it was terribly plotted but had all the right ideas. Reminded me of Steven King in the sense that like… there are lots of reasons why it should be good but it’s held down by Mary-sues, lame characters, a plot that feels constantly cornered without a deus ex machina, and disorganization at every turn. But there are good ideas throughout the whole thing. I’m not sure if that makes it more frustrating or a better book. And the prose is serviceable, unlike King where sometimes the writing often uses obtuse Boomer metaphors about some lame rock band. I’d give it a 4/10 and I think LOTR is a far, far more interesting fantasy novel.
I'll probably be a heretic and watch the movie first. Dennis Villeneuve is an extremely gifted director.
Dude, when I read the book, my first thought was “this is an awful book but if someone had a really vivid imagination and knew what to cut and how to fix portions, it’d make an awesome movie.” I’ll be a heretic with you and say the movie will probably be better than the book.
I once wrote a story and the teacher recommended I try and go out and publish it. One of the critiques from a student was, "This reminds me of Dune"
Oh I though it was the David Lynch adaptation for some reason. EDIT: I'm slammed rn. Just realized this is a doc lol.
The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells. Big Wells fan since discovering the awesome Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of the War of the Worlds and the book it was based on. They still haven’t made a half-decent media adaptation of that one yet...
Been reading The Demon by Hubert Selby Junior, who also wrote Requiem For a Dream. It's about a man who is very successful in life but who is always fighting the urge to sabotage himself through sexual hedonism and other degenerate acts. The way Hubert writes about escalation, with the man being content with his wife only to start sleeping with other women once a week, and then needing more and more extreme stuff to relieve his urges, felt very relevant to my own struggles with porn.
I've find one too in my language, isn't that bad as said, is well written.. Just don't get brainwashed like only if you go with them you will be saved.
I don't have a problem with the book per se, more so the man who wrote it - Joseph Smith. He was a known and convicted con artist. I do appreciate the gift though. Even if it's an attempt to convert me, haha.
Also Jeovah witness do it to me, old women and always give me gifts, like foods and other things, actually the bibble I read is their own. Anyway they never attempt to convert me. There is a lot of kind people from Jeovah witness anyway but some are strange (for what ''strange'' mean for us) Try with Antroposophy but i think everyone know i ask people to read about it so i am like a scientologist or a jeovah witness that try to convert to my philosophy.
